Computer Guy

This guy was wise enough to start a computer group/class for senior citizens... back when computers were the new thing... about 15 years ago.

For my fellow geeks: we talked for a few minutes about the progression from 286's to 386's and 486's... he's seen a lot of change. To totally geek out for this photo, the only lighting I used was the classroom LCD projector. :)

The portrait is nothing great, but I just really like his smile. Some people are just so happy to be photographed, and I guess that makes me happy, too.

The Night the News Stopped

What happens when your newsroom loses power and you don't have a UPS system for your computers? Not much.

Well, eventually we got moving on things. Our power was out for 43 minutes... in hindsight that's not long at all, but when you're trying to produce a newspaper on deadline, that feels like an eternity.

I went out on the street and shot some of the local businesses shut down, but I found our newsroom at a short standstill a much more interesting subject.

... you'd think I was interning at Pebble Beach. We do have a surprising amount of golf in Wisconsin.

JJ Smith is a racer at WIR. He is 64 years old. And he wins.

A woman lost control of her vehicle downtown a block from the P-C office at Houdini Plaza where a blood drive was occurring. She would have plowed into the crowd had it not been for a lamppost and signal box.

Has anyone else noticed that they have started adding sweetener to the glue strips on greeting card envelopes?

What's with that? It's such a shock. I really had accepted it as a toil of life that I would simply have to endure in my mere existence on this earth: envelopes taste bad.

A couple new frames.... one from today's junior golf tournament and the other from a feature story on Mississippi kids who are seasonally adopted by Wisconsin families in a program designed to bridge the existing cultural and racial gap.

Don't ask... I have no clue what he's doing. I just love the contorted arms and the colors. I need to call and get his name for contest entries. This is the head coach for the local YMCA team shot through the dissembled waterslide at the annual BirdBath statewide Swim Meet here in Appleton.

Never complain about shooting a 10K run...

...they can make for great photos... especially when they hit the finish line in the morning light! I wish I could say this was the winner, but we ran it nonetheless 5col.

These guys are a local band that played at LiFest. For a story on how many secular bands have their roots in Christian music...

... take guitar sounds from U2 and mash them with the piano and vocals of Coldplay and this is what you get. They're good, check them out.

Lifest is an annual Christian music festival in Oshkosh... apparently these kids got sick of the music and decided to go pound each other in a game of dodgeball...

That thing they call rodeo...

I went to my first ever rodeo today. I always thought this event would happen in Texas or someplace southwest, but ya know... sometimes Wisconsin will surprise you like that.

It's just 2 hours past deadline now, and as I edited for this post, I'm second guessing what I chose for print. That's the disadvantage to working weekends... there's often few people to bounce things off of.

The other day I was told that there would only be room for two photos, but I was encouraged to shoot a package for the sake of it... for myself.

Here are several of my picks.

OK... so I forgot a few images from the opening ceremony of the soccer tournament... forgive me.

It was kind of olympic in the sense that there was a big march by team into the municipal stadium. There were three of us shooting, and I was the man on the ground... we had another guy in the stands, and a third behind the scenes and shooting an overhead-overall.

I arrived on the scene of a fire last week. It was kind of far away, so the flames were reduced to lots of smoke by the time I got there.

I saw this guy being gently restrained from approaching the home and I figured he might be the homeowner. Come to find out he was just a interesting-looking bystander who was "wisely" smoking a cigarette next to the fire engine.

US Youth Soccer Regionals, Day 5 – Game Over

Here's my coverage from the semifinals of this soccer tournament. Because no local teams made it to the finals, our extended coverage stopped here.

It was nice to end on a day with some emotion and genuine effort.
