Gene's Deep Rock

It's the last remaining full-service gas station in the Green Bay metro-area. Gene's Deep Rock on Main Street, which opened in 1974, has new owners that refuse to let go of that tradition.

Gas attendants Bill DeShambo, left, and Shane Cure chat by the register after completing service for a rush of customers at Gene's Deep Rock in Green Bay, Wis., Tuesday, April 13, 2010.

A tire gauge rests in Cure's shirt pocket.

Cure, left, gives a windshield wash while DeShambo fills up the tank for Dolores Peters of New Franken at Gene's. "[Full service is] why I come here," says Peters. "I've got a bad back. It's hard to get in and out of the car. So the young guys are doing me a favor."

The destruction of Dave Bush

To say that Dave Bush did not have a good game today would be an understatement. Bush allowed nine runs on 10 hits in under 4 innings. The Brewers kept him in, hit after run after hit, seemingly to stand in as a punching bag for the Cubbies.

Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Dave Bush (31) throws in the first inning against the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Sunday, April 25, 2010.

Dining out

I shoot some of our "Dining Out" restaurant profiles. Food can be easy to shoot... wide open with window light... but the challenge comes in capturing a restaurant's ambiance.

Our most recent profile was about country club dining, misconceptions of the experience and how it's changing. It's not often that you have such a nice view to work with. Whether or not this photo was successful, I'm not quite sure, yet. But it had a good deal of potential.

The dining area at Oneida Golf and Country Club in Oneida, Wis., offers an elevated view of the course, shown Monday, April 12, 2010. Prepared food, from left: filet mignon with fingerling potatoes, sautéed portobellos and spinach, and port wine demi-glace; grilled Chilean sea bass with orzo, feta salad and oregano vinaigrette; and an appetizer of cured salmon terrine, citrus arugula salad, tarragon oil, and black Tobiko caviar.

Yay, Manure!

Kris Scheider uses a skid steer loader to lay down bedding in a barn at Zirbel Dairy Farm in Glenmore, Wis., Wednesday, March 31, 2010. The farm has invested in equipment that squeezes water out of manure, leaving dry fiber that is used for bedding for the cows.

Green Bay Packers' Mark Murphy

Assigned to photograph Green Bay Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy the other day with minimal guidance: "Need an environmental portrait of Murphy in Lambeau." Wind, time and light were the challenges du jour. Managed to come away from the shoot with a couple decent frames to accommodate any type of layout.
