Arena Football
I have a love-hate relationship with arena football.
I'll leave my personal feelings out of it other than to say that I'm surprised Green Bay can sustain a second football team that's not the Green Bay Packers. Apparently fans in the Tundra are so starved for the gridiron during the NFL's off-season that they're willing to watch the game played on a carpeted half-field.
I digress.
AFL games are just as dark as the darkest stadium you've ever shot in (fewer lights on than hockey), the plays are shorter and quicker than the NFL (I think), and your backgrounds are absolutely littered with advertisements.
It's a nightmare.
It's also an occasion that you can try to rise to.

State Track and Field in La Crosse
Some people loathe it. I love it.
This year I got to return to La Crosse, Wis., for the WIAA 2010 Track and Field State Championships, covering the finish line for six daily newspapers and websites in our regional group. Two other photographers from the group covered the field events and grabbed features around the stadium.
Two years ago I covered the tournament on my own for one paper. Either way (solo or part of a team), it's a challenge to keep your images fresh and your brain from burning out. By the second day you never want to see another heat sheet again in your life. But anyways, it is nice to be chosen to cover stuff that's important to our readers.
Here are some of my best from the track:
