This year I got to return to La Crosse, Wis., for the WIAA 2010 Track and Field State Championships, covering the finish line for six daily newspapers and websites in our regional group. Two other photographers from the group covered the field events and grabbed features around the stadium.
Two years ago I covered the tournament on my own for one paper. Either way (solo or part of a team), it's a challenge to keep your images fresh and your brain from burning out. By the second day you never want to see another heat sheet again in your life. But anyways, it is nice to be chosen to cover stuff that's important to our readers.
Here are some of my best from the track:
Freedom's Liz Bloy, center, leads Green Bay Notre Dame's Allie Woodward, left, early in the 3200M Relay at the WIAA State Track & Field meet in La Crosse, Wis., Friday, June 4, 2010.
La Crosse Central's Derek Finsterwalder recovers after competing in the 800M Run, Friday.
Sheboygan North's Connor Stengel celebrates with his teammates after finishing first in the 400M Dash, Saturday, June 5, 2010.
Iola-Scandinavia finishes fifth in the boys Division 3 400M Relay.
Fans take cover under umbrellas as rain begins to fall mid-afternoon, Saturday, June 5, 2010.
Members of the Manitowoc Lutheran girls 400M Relay team receive their sixth place medals.
A runner takes off on a rain-soaked track in the girls 800M Run, Saturday, June 5, 2010.

Milwaukee Vincent's Sedrick Washington is surrounded by track officials after he fell out of his wheelchair in the 800M Run Wheelchair event at the WIAA State Track & Field meet in La Crosse, Wis., June 5, 2010. Washington did not finish the race, although WIAA rules state competitors may get back in their wheelchair - even with assistance - and continue. This was the first year for wheelchair events in the WIAA tournament.
