Tug-of-War team to represent U.S. at world championships

A tug of war competitor uses a nail to apply a sticky resin to his hands before the start of the Mount Vernon, Wis., team's practice at Forest of Fame Park, Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014. The team will represent the United States at the upcoming Tug-of-War World Championships in Madison.

Competitors dig their specialized, homemade boots into the soil while pulling during the practice.

Competitors pull against each other during practice.

The hand of Steve Moorman of Manchester, Iowa, grips the rope.

Jack Davis, 6, plays with a toy tractor as his father, mother, and other extended family members practice. Davis' grandfather is a former competitor and current coach.

Coach John Davis observes a pull during the practice. Concrete weights used for strength training sit in the background.

Aubrey McNett of Monroe rests between pulls late in the practice.
